Laminate Floor Care & Maintenance
Caring for laminate floors is easy because they’re made to stand up to wear and tear, even in busy households. Follow the manufacturers’s recommended care and maintenance steps and you can expect many years of effortless beauty.
Caring for Laminate Floors
For general cleaning or spot cleaning, use a slightly damp microfiber or cloth mop. Vacuum or sweep daily to pick up fine dirt and grit that can act as sandpaper to scratch your floor and dull the surface. If you vacuum, make sure to use a soft brush or wood floor attachment.
Clean up liquid spills as soon as they occur with a cloth or sponge. Do not allow excess liquids or wet areas – including your pet’s water bowl – to pool on the floor as this can stain or damage the protective wear layer.
For occasional thorough cleaning, use a well-squeezed mop dampened with floor cleaner specifically recommended for laminate. A light mopping across the floor is all you need! Don’t use soap-based detergents or “mop and shine” products as these can leave a dull film on the surface.
The gloss surface of laminate flooring doesn’t require waxes or varnishes to keep it looking great, so there’s no need to use them!
Maintaining Your Laminate Floor
Your beautiful laminate floor is scratch and impact resistant, but not indestructible! Maximize its durability by following these laminate floor care tips.
Place a natural material or colorfast mat at outside entrances to collect tracked-in dirt and absorb excess moisture.
Use protective felt pads under furniture legs and appliances.
Avoid sharp or pointed objects with concentrated weight such as high heels, and keep pets’ nails trimmed.
Do not slide furniture or appliances across a laminate floor. If possible, carefully lift heavy items when repositioning them. Or use a wheeled dolly after first placing a clean sheet of smooth plywood or large, heavy cardboard over your laminate floor to protect it.
If you expect an area of your laminate floor to be subjected to heavier than normal foot traffic, use an area rug that’s colorfast.
Occasionally, rearrange furniture to avoid indentation.
Make minor nicks or scratches disappear with a color-matched correction kit that’s available at your flooring retailer.
